The Tusker Lite Mt. Rwenzori Marathon is a transformative event, attracting international runners and promoting tourism in Uganda. Held in Kasese District, this marathon merges sports with environmental conservation, showcasing Uganda’s scenic beauty and rich natural heritage.

A Global Event with Local Impact

The 2024 edition saw participants from over 20 countries compete in courses certified by World Athletics, including a 5km fun run, a 10km race, a 21km half marathon, and the 42km full marathon. Beyond competition, the event united young Ugandans in advocating for environmental preservation and sustainable tourism.

Environmental Awareness Through Sports

The marathon emphasized ecological stewardship, with students like Yasin Asaba and Herbert Mugisa spearheading conservation efforts. These young leaders identified areas needing reforestation and initiated tree-planting projects to combat soil degradation, aligning with Uganda’s climate goals.

Collaboration for a Sustainable Future

Organizations like WWF-Uganda played a pivotal role, in incorporating environmental education into the event. The Green Schools Project, active in 35 schools, highlights the importance of involving youth in conservation. State Minister for Sports, Peter Ogwang, applauded these efforts, emphasizing the synergy between sports and environmental initiatives.

A Boost to Tourism and Local Economies

The marathon spotlighted the Rwenzori Mountains, driving international tourism to the region. This influx benefits local economies, promotes cultural exchange, and supports Uganda’s broader tourism objectives, solidifying the nation as a premier destination for sports enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.

Conclusion: Running Toward a Greener Uganda

The Tusker Lite Mt. Rwenzori Marathon exemplifies Uganda’s commitment to blending tourism, sports, and conservation. By fostering global participation and local environmental efforts, the event not only boosts tourism but also paves the way for a sustainable future.
