How To Save Fuel While Travelling In Uganda: Practical Tips for 2025

With the rising fuel prices in Uganda, optimizing your vehicle’s fuel efficiency has become more crucial than ever. Whether you’re commuting in Kampala or exploring the countryside, implementing smart driving habits and vehicle maintenance can lead to significant savings. Here’s how to save fuel while travelling in Uganda:

1. Drive Smoothly and Maintain Steady Speeds

Aggressive driving behaviors like rapid acceleration and sudden braking can decrease fuel efficiency by up to 33% on highways. Maintaining a consistent speed, especially between 50-80 km/h, is ideal for fuel conservation.

2. Regular Vehicle Maintenance

Keeping your vehicle in top condition ensures optimal fuel consumption. Regularly check and replace air filters, use the recommended engine oil, and ensure your engine is well-tuned. Proper maintenance can improve fuel economy by 1-2%.

3. Proper Tire Inflation

Under-inflated tires increase rolling resistance, causing the engine to work harder and consume more fuel. Ensure your tires are inflated to the manufacturer’s recommended pressure to enhance fuel efficiency.

4. Reduce Excess Weight

Carrying unnecessary items in your vehicle adds extra weight, leading to higher fuel consumption. Remove non-essential items from your car to improve fuel efficiency.

5. Plan Your Trips

Combining errands into one trip and avoiding peak traffic hours can reduce idle time and unnecessary mileage, saving fuel. Utilize navigation apps to find the most efficient routes.

6. Limit Air Conditioning Use

Air conditioning can increase fuel consumption, especially at lower speeds. Use it sparingly and consider opening windows when driving at lower speeds to save fuel.

7. Avoid Idling

Idling consumes fuel without moving the vehicle. If you anticipate being stationary for more than a minute, it’s more fuel-efficient to turn off the engine and restart when ready to move.
